چکیده

Since its original description by von Graefe in 1857, normal tension glaucoma (NTG) has remained a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge for ophthalmologists. NTG is a clinical condition associated with a pathologically excavated optic disc and characteristic glaucomatous visual field loss. Apart from the intraocular pressure (IOP) being in the statistically ‘normal’ range, the clinical course of the disease shares similarities with that of primary open angle glaucoma (POAG). Some authors have questioned whether NTG merely represents an artificial distinction from POAG by the IOP or represents a subset of disease along a continuum of which patients show a different clinical course as far as patterns of optic disc damage and quantity and quality of visual field loss are concerned, possibly as a result of different mechanisms of damage. The current literature appears to support the hypothesis that NTG and POAG represent a continuum of OAGs, in which a certain level of IOP is the predominant causative risk factor in POAG, while factors in addition to IOP are more important in NTG. There is considerable overlap between the 2 conditions. Additionally, within the population of patients with NTG, there are subsets in which blood flow and other factors may assume relative importance.

A Prospective Study on QT Dispersion in Neonates: A New Risk Factor

Background: QT dispersion (QTd) especially after ischemic heart disease and myocardial infarction is a prognostic predictor of mortality, in adult medicine.  Objective: This study was undertaken to determine the correlation between QT dispersion and neonatal stress. Neonates were divided into 3 groups: normal term (30 cases), normal preterm (30 cases) and sick neonates (36 cases), born between ...

Evaluation of various factors relating to intraocular pressure and C/D ratio

Introduction: Intraocular pressure (IOP) is determined by three factors: the rate of aqueous humor production by the ciliary’s body, the resistances to aqueous out flow across the trabecular meshwork and the level of episcleral vessel pressure. IOP varies with a number of factors, including: age, sex, race, systemic disease and diurnal variation. The purpose of this study is measurement of IO...

What is the Real Cause of Glaucoma?

Introduction: The term glaucoma refers to a group of diseases that have a characteristic optic neuropathy with associated visual field loss in common. Intraocular pressure has been considered to be the only causal factor for glaucoma and the only factor that can be manipulated to alter the course of the disease. But considering high intraocular pressure as the only factor responsible for glauco...

Glaucoma and the Thyroid.

THE observation of Lagrange (1922) that a glaucomatous eye is "a sick eye in a sick body" is a challenge to ophthalmologists. For some time an association has been noted between hypertension and a high intra-ocular pressure, but Duke-Elder (1940) considers that this relationship is accidental rather than essential. More recently an increased incidence of primary glaucoma has been noted in diabe...
